MOON LETTERS : POETRY
Shadowfax - by Marina Dawson
My tail streams out behind me as over emerald hills I run,
I am never lonely though I keep the company of none,
I spend my days following the wind, and basking in the sun.
My lineage is ancient and of all horses I am king
The freedom of my people is written in the songs we sing:
"I will not live in the world of Man with the servitude it brings."
To only one do I grant passage, he is a wizard white
I carried him from danger in a fast and desperate flight
And as the miles flew by he told me of Mans terrifying plight.
I listened to him at length although I did not understand
Why my regal heart should care about the struggles in the land.
The wizard leaned down and on my shoulder placed a wizened hand.
"My dear sweet horse, this is not a fight that solely concerns Man.
It goes well beyond your kingdom, and even that of Rohan
And in this darkened time we must all give everything we can."
And so we journey onward, over the earth my hooves do pound.
My legs reach out and my body straightens, covering the ground,
Carrying him toward battle where the horns and trumpets sound.
If by chance I dont return, I ask you to remember me,
I offered all that was mine to give to keep my people free,
And in the words of song and myth Ill gain immortality.
