The Departure of Samwise - By Beren Segarra
The Departure of Samwise
'Fore the ship of the Last Elf sailed in the ending of an Age
With Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin the Page
Past towers of men and downs of earth in peaceful Eriador
Down Mithlond to the Gulf of Lh_n named in songs of lore
Good Samwise son of Hamfast, now bent with age and frail
Loyal companion, Mayor of mercy came to end his tale.
Gardener of the first degree and husband without peer
Why did you leave your home and land and those who hold you dear?
The earth here still will call your name in whispers through the Shire
Both Mallorn tree and all thirteen will weep who call you sire
Both root and heart will stay cold and black, bitten as by frost
Until your ruddy cheeks come back over deep waters tossed.
Many-termed mayor, simple soothsayer, steadfast friend of Elves,
What was it that has brought you from the land your kin has delved?
It's said that on each Mid-Year's day you went to Party Field
And there as you stood like sentinel your suff'ring was revealed
There that you tarried was there where you married the late sweet Rosie
But her ring on your finger long did not linger your true love though she be.
Too strong was the bind you had unfelt whilst your lady breathed
To follow your master 'cross the sea when the blade of her life was sheathed.
Red Narya you carried not, that of unquenched flame
Nor wield the dazzling azure of the Great Vilya of fame
Not Nenya of mithril make that outshone its wearer's hair
But the unadorned Ring, most evil of things, you by necessity did bear.
So at river's side he took his leave of the sweet Elanor the Fair
He sadly marched down to the shore and left her sobbing there
May Manw_ guide the shipwright's ship that has led our Sam away
O'er the depths of sea and bounds of time to Havens that are Grey
Oh, Hero of the Red Book! Left to the proud Fairbains
Yet gone now is glory of wielder of story and star of Dúnedain.
